it is rare to hear a debut 12 inch single that really blows you away. that is hardly a controversial statement, in truth, most producers take time to find their feet, developing a distinct style over a period of years, rather than months. magnesii, then, is something special. currently based in amsterdam. the previously unheard of producer has delivered a stunning debut 12 inch for tom tragos voyage direct label. raw, fuzzy and in turns melancholic, spellbinding and intense, its three tracks bubble and hiss to the distinct sound of vintage analogue hardware.

after blazing trails with his debut longplayer exits and wowing the sceptical chat rooms with his all-hardware boiler room blow out, the north country bit smasher returns. the iiva ep is mini album of experiments, re-animations and rebirths. like dr herbert west with a hypo of fluro-serum loops haunt plunges elbow deep into his hardrives sonic corpses unleashing an army of weaponised soundscapes. unlike its big brother exits, iiva sets an immediate agenda, drums burst through fizzing tape hiss and field recorded found sounds are given urgency and purpose. along with an army of hooded mystery collaborators pans nhk even joins the fray with a radiophonic technoid rerub of iiva. all action.

we have reached number 10. time to celebrate with a remix edition of the deep88 & melchior sultana project. awaiting the album release (later 2014) we asked 2 of our heroes if they would like to make a remix for us. with a lot a lot (and a lot) of happiness we announce the nightwave remix by ben >cozmo d< cenac, formerly known as dream 2 science (and sha-lor and newcleus and the cellar boyz), that made us a wonderful space trip with his dreamy synths and stylish drums. the other remix is >yo house< treated by the excellent australian producer andras fox, that converts the song into a super classy deep house one with a lot of hiss and love. the man behind > running late> really made some magic over the melody of yo house, as usual with the aim of analogue warm-tape-feel and his crazy skills.

after a short journey outta space, the militia strikes back on earth with its sixth reference! inspired by the 90s detroit scene, uk-based producer binny delivers here two fantastic weapons, full of millsian reminiscences, but still away from the hiss and swooshes. both destroyer & a function of time stay to the essential elements, combinating hardness and soul masterfully. on the b side, fundamental interactions remix as well as antigones reconstruction surprises with an unexpected u-turn. in fact, any techno addict will find his dose on this release.

nelistening back, ‘interlude’ will feel like the perfect opening to ‘skylax’. a jazzy encore crawls in, morphing into a skippy hip-hop instrumental with jason’s signature flourishes all over it. aptly named as it is, this is the breathing space between whatever came before in your day, and the eleven deep house gems that are to follow. speaking of, ‘the love’ will have you gripped from the first bar. it glides the listener in, then subtly drops that signature, tightly-tuned bassline of jason’s and continues onto soulful vocals from there. ‘old dayz’ touches on a bit of a nostalgic note. the spoken vox cuts harken back to 90s hip-hop joints, playing over a looped latin sample-led beat. from there, ‘rawkicks 2’ shows jason’s rough and ready sampling style in action. a seemingly simple track, but one which has that special something which guarantees to keep people on the floor moving for its duration. ‘cut b’ contrasts this nicely, being a much cleaner production with tight drum programming and synth work. that said, it still has the classic jg atmosphere we love. closing out the first half of the album, ‘definition’ slows the pace ever so slightly, with its eternal pad structure that builds up the track’s momentum into something very mellow and deep.bringing in the second half of ‘skylax’, ‘john blue’ takes things back a notch further. a deeper tune, yet one that shows off an uncharacteristically punchy bass hit from jason. ‘last night’ is a track more reminiscent of jason’s first lost cuts ep on wax classic, sounding as if it had been freshly taken off an old tape with its sample-led beat and background hiss. the last four tracks of the album see a return to the ‘mastercuts’ and ‘lovedits’ series which fans will recognize from the ‘lost cuts’ records, with ‘lovedits 7’ and ‘mastercut 5’ respectively. the former is a laid back female vocal edit with the entire suite of signature jg touches while the latter is a garage house hit more crafted for the club. ‘bb’ brings the album to a close, twisting a disco/funksample over a pallet of drums and effects for the near six-minute duration of the track.all in all, this is the perfect follow up to jason’s debut album ‘313.4.ever’, with tracks for both the club and home listening. if you happened to miss the first album back in 2012, don’t forget that now you have the chance to grab it in a special double pack with ‘skylax’ on cd!so, needless to say, this timeless record is a must purchase for all collectors and djs out there

here in full chopped up afro-future mode he fuzes the hiss crackle and fuzz of heavy tribal sampling with broad stroke drum programming. the fluidity of time signatures and deft jazz minded drumming gives the tambacounda a woozy and hallucinogenic feel, tracks travelling from deep jungle drama to carnival ecstasy.

wanda group, aka louis johnstone, is the latest artist to release a record with notown recordings. an artist who *creates beautiful, decayed landscapes of tape crackle, hiss and distortion* (the quietus), the music of wanda group is an other-worldly collage of sounds that touch on musique concrete and other forms of oblique, densely beautiful sounds.

following on your work as one of the twin pioneers of glaswegian radge-rock in arab strap cant be an easy task. aidan clearly has had other ideas, quite different ideas, and most of them comprise his solo project release via his alter ego, lucky pierre. in these recordings, l. pierre pays an affectionate tribute to the wear and tear of overplayed vinyl, the hiss, scratch and pop of records long loved but worn down. it is the sound of survival, the echoes of a life lived well, moth eaten music of dasness and resilience, of beauty and backbone.

prime numbers return with m7. the first side is taken by a remix of wireman’s >armour<, the original of which was included on pn04 released at the end of last year. the remix is from move d (deep space network, source records), he ups the tempo and in trademark fashion softens the surfaces of the original, warming the core of the track whilst creating a bass heavy groove with twisting beats, synths and a husky hypnotic vocal sample. the flip includes two tracks. to start we have >crushed< by actress. darren j. cunningham aka actress runs the much lauded werk records and this track is taken from his limited cd only album >hazyville< (released on werk in the autumn of last year ) >crushed< is slo-mo, extra bass heavy, low slung house with an addictive lofi synth riff and submerged strings. the track bumps along with hiss and crackle to good affect before turning into a badalamenti-esque loop to finish. to round things off be, the up & coming manchester based producer provides >when you left<. be cut his teeth with the chicago based still music and a great al hudson reedit which found extensive dj support on its release. >when you left< is a shuffling downbeat house groove with a jazz sentiment featuring deep rhodes keys and clipped drums, the track breaks up into a bluesy accapella section then builds up to a more direct 4/4 groove to the end

assemble music returns with a three-track ep from colognes david joseph aka st. joseph, exploring further the refined, tripping path forged on the labels previous release from daze maxim. the pianos, vocal snatches and ambient hiss of josephs releases on platzhirsch are present and correct, but here the jazz flourishes are reduced down into something far slicker. these tracks have been prepared using a keen blade, and none sharper than >personal dancefloor<. heavy drum programming and a rumbling bottom end bring to mind theo parrish in his moodier moments, but the deal is sweetened by light piano, garage-like vocal samples and a deep, burning 4 love bassline. >indigo< spins the duke ellington classic into a spiralling, shuffling chugger that will bring a 30s harlem spirit to enterprising dancefloors. move the needle to the b2, though, for the eps party hit. written in 2009 and reflecting that years raw arrangements and joyous samples, >wave/table/muscle< finally gets a vinyl release, proving this sound endures to this day. expect more of the same from assemble music with their next release featuring vera and ricardo villalobos.

>a correction< is the new album from fieldhead and continues the dusty, bereft sounds of previous releases – they shook hands for hours (home assembly 2009) and riser (gizeh 2010). 2010 saw paul elam depart the uk for vancouver, canada and there is no doubt that the vast northern candian landscapes have influenced the new fieldhead material. the familiar tape hiss, scratchy, decaying atmospheres remain in place but with a correction elam has managed to sculpt a vaster, more expansive palate of sounds. minimalistic on first listen, a correction is a record which slowly unfurls on multiple listens to reveal subtle melodies and details that dont distract from the overal ambience but in fact set apart fieldheads music from many other, safer artists within the genre.

peter kruder returns to the gigolo mega-church to present two new tracks from his recent arsenal of techno and house dance-floor bombs. needless to say 2009 has been a good year for gigolo and hell with the high times being shared by peter kruder. beginning back in march when we released peter kruders first 12 inch in 7 years as part of the cd eleven release. followed swiftly by the release of dj hells acclaimed >teufelswerk< album, recorded and produced largely in peter kruders vienna based studio. so as we approach the end of 2009 it gives us great pleasure to announce the latest ep >hard to find<.
on the a-side you find the title track, which takes in influences from detroit techno circa the age of ur to north african hooks. the filter sweep towards the end, which serves as the drop/break, is a master-class in restrained modulation that is bound to ignite any dance floor. on the b-side we find >25 west 38th st.< a slightly more reserved affair opening with the sound of the ocean air, then swiftly diving into a bass driven groove, which features lush strings and a piano-led top line creating a track that is as atmospheric as it is rhythmic. the ep itself takes influence from the b-side on two levels, the most immediate being the title of the track, which is the address of the old nu groove records offices. this is peter kruders homage to a time when dance music served as a momentary escape, an opportunity to make those around happy. it also brings peters relationship with gigolo records full circle, having begun in 2004 with his >nu groove< remix of hells >listen to the hiss<.
resident advisor recently alluded to the idea that peter kruders finest solo work is coming exclusively through gigolo records. it is certainly not beyond the realms of possibility as this latest record goes a long way to proving. with such a statement in mind we invite you to listen to the latest release from peter kruder.

this new collaboration between two of cadenzas finest talents makes its official debut on mobilee with black shoes, a cut that pops, crackles, and snaps like youd never believe. dance floor ready yet unwilling to sacrifice an explicit focus on the details, black shoes pulsates with bass while suggesting a kind of lightness as whispered and fragmented voices hiss and murmur in the background. the melodics, which give off the feel of being in constant flux, provide a nice contrast to the intensely regularized bass drum while simultaneously meshing with the popping percussion that guide the track along its course. breakdowns filled with the sounds of static and 8-bit provide a nice experimental touch to this track that works equally well as a late-night romp as it does on the headphones. b-side speech also gives off a stuttered feel but is even more blippy and fragmented than its counterpart while migrating towards a more jacking vibe. brito and toro compliment this fractured sound with extensive use of vocal samples—both spoken and sung—that, while incomprehensible, lock in seamlessly with the overall feel of the track. melody here references both vintage sounds and traditional minimalism with the end result being a fusion of the two that is truly extraordinary.

lee curtiss and spectral sound have been running in the same pack for years-&#64257,,nally, after suf&#64257,,ciently circling each other and snif&#64257,,ng each others business, spectral and lee have joined forces to release the detroit producers the black door ep, and it s a doozy. lee curtiss traf&#64257,,cs in airtight, undeniable dance tracks with a tricksters sense of experimentation-the black door ep is all that and more, a beguiling 12 inch whose charms multiply with each listen. >black door beauty< opens side a with a touch of chicago futurism, spinning congas, staccato vocal samples, and a swift dusting of hi-hats into a house anthem with psychedelic undertones. berlin producer dyed soundoroms remix minimizes the sub-bass thump and plays up the tracks oddball trappings, tricking out >black door beauty< with the sounds of creaking hinges, neurotic synthesizers, and a particularly creepy chorus of hysterical tittering. b-side >smoking mirrors< guides the listener through clouds of melting organ tones and busy, polyrhythmic click-clack as a sturdy bassline (with a funky, french-house beat skip) cuts through the haze. curtiss lets the rhythm do the work, building to multiple climaxes in the span of seven minutes. at the end of each anxious buildup, there s a womans breathless moan, a let-the-air-out-of-the-tires hiss, and it s time to do it all over again.

dfa complete the set of black meteoric star tracks onto vinyl with >dreamcatcher/dawn< on the third and final 12 from the album. gavin russom has created a unique tribute to the early days of synth and drum machine experimentation with this project, inhabiting the spirits of everyone from giorgio moroder to ron hardy with hypnotically brilliant effects. >dreamcatcher< is another undiluted jam at 120bpm, sounding like a lo-fi moroder tripout with gorgeous arpeggiations swirling in a pool of shallow resonant tape hiss. >dawn< on the flip is the slowest track on the album, a sub 100bpm psyched electro-soul groove with cracking handclaps and an uncompromisingly lo-fi attitude. dead cool.

baum005 are no other than marko fürstenberg of a.r.t.less/rotary- cocktail/ornaments and thinner fame. on the b side the artist sgi_s joins with a remix. what can you say, but espenhain on the a side is a dancefloor filler. a tight compressed, kick and marko s atmospheric touch of dubby techno. the espenhain remix on the b side, is shaped by swiss artist sgi_s. this track is more of a pure techno track with a old school feeling to it. appegiator groove with a break that builds up to a peak point, but still manages to be deep. ratsholz is the last track on the ep, a soundscape of hiss and noises that forms the hypnotic groove of the track. it starts slowly but it evolves into a sure late night track with a nice melody!

split ep of dark metallic hard-fun from the human shield mixing funnel. manasyt leaves his manners at home and takes the a side by force with two solid cuts of pure industrial horror: wrist sewing leaves little to the imagination whilst his bloc 08 set opener vibro speeds up the synth suspense until your loins are sore and your mind is truly spent. overworked and underpaid north wales bedroom musician cestrian (bunker/monox) softens the blow just a bit on the reverse with his hearse giving you the perfect funeral, driving off into the near distance with dead waves and metallic shards of fluctuating hiss. the stately anti funk of rizzla teeth brings us to a conclusion with gun metal grey sneers of contempt and harrowing neg vibe downer skree. suit up and dig in!

plot s 4th release, >casa acido<� (free translation for acid house), comes by the hands of 2 renowned finnish artists, zentex and jussy-peka! it s a great ep composed by 3 very solid tracks reaching out to very different emotions. in zentex original there is growing tension supported on a wobbly fat sexy bass. >lena<� is packed with emotion. a silent hiss and cruising episodic elements transport you to a very dynamic scenario. jussy-peka remix is anamazing dance floor track! hedefines it as a modern acid trance remix!

mike parker and donato dozzy teamed up for the first time for this unprecedented and eccentric release called excavations ep. starting off with hiss, originally found in 2001, mike parker used his vintage tools to dig the surface of a designated area, reaching sub-harmonic and high frequency symphonies. the excavation continued as mike joined donato dozzy at the ruins of pompeii, with the discovery of fullonica di stephanus. the findings were mysterious

a remastered version of shenzhou on triple vinyl and double cd with the bonus album-the samphire tower. paul cooper, pitchfork: shenzhou, aside from being the name of the chinese manned-spaceflight vehicles, means magic vessel, and i cant imagine a more apt description for geir jenssen s latest excursion into ambient deep listening. after following an aphexian trajectory with his releases on apollo, the ambient sublabel of belgiums r&s records, jenssen veered from the padded sci-fi-inspired techno of microgravity and patashnik with 1997s substrata, a genre-defining exploration of drifting soundscapes. substrata remains for many the album that perfectly expresses the serenity and intensity of arctic wildernesses, a landscape jenssen knows intimately, having spent much of his life in the norwegian arctic circle. in 2000, jenssen nearly eclipsed the success of substrata with cirque, a frequently frosty submerging of excerpted conversations and found environmental sounds that rivals wolfgang voigts gas project in its rumbling, gauzy beauty. jenssen again relies on found sound as source material for shenzhou, but this time, the found sound is old vinyl recordings of the orchestral works of french impressionist composer and ambient precursor, claude debussy. jenssen lifts fragments of these scratched records in a similar manner as he did for cirques black lamb grey falcon and iberia eterea

an unreleased classic from the vaults emerges with beautiful reshapes by cv313 (recorded and reshaped from 2007-2016) this is where the sound of cv313 was realized, culled from cassette tapes recorded live (1995-2000) with nothing but analog/digital hardware, no computer in sight (excluding our commodore 64 midi sequencer, which is still alive and well today). the radius project has been absent since the final release in 2001, the first 12- appearing in 1996 (limited white label run of 100 copies pressed at acme pressing in canada) after revisiting these works we realized there was truly some magic here. this project was initially sent to rod modell & mike schommer shortly after they launched their brilliant deepchord label in 2001. they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. (that is of course, if you can get past the tape hiss) we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting these masters.
